Easter Homily: “The Empty Tomb is Full of H.O.P.E.”
On this radiant Easter Sunday, I’m reminded of a personal moment — a time I was standing in a long queue in Jerusalem, waiting to enter the tomb of Jesus.
I struck up a conversation with an Indian family in the line. They had come as tourists to Israel and had unknowingly joined the queue out of curiosity.
After a long 40-minute wait, they stepped out of the tomb. The daughter, a little confused, exclaimed,
“We waited all this time… just to enter an empty tomb?!”
She was probably expecting to see Jesus' body still there! 😄
That innocent reaction made me smile.
Yes, dear friends, that’s exactly the point of Easter.
Today’s Gospel from Luke 24:1–12 presents to us not a sealed tomb — but an empty one.
And that empty tomb is not meaningless… it is full — full of H.O.P.E.
This hope isn’t abstract or sentimental. It’s solid. Real. Life-giving.
It’s a hope that changes how we live every single day.
Let me share with you what this H.O.P.E. means — drawn from the Resurrection itself:
H – He is Risen!
The very heart of Easter is this:
He is Risen!
Not a myth. Not a metaphor. But a miraculous, world-shaking reality.
Jesus has conquered death — not just for Himself, but for us all.
His Resurrection proclaims:
Evil never has the final word.
Pain is never the end of the story.
Love always triumphs.
So hold on to this truth:
Hope begins where fear ends.
We don’t follow a dead guru or a lifeless idol — we follow the Living God,
Alive right now — as I speak and as you listen.
Easter is not about a tomb. It’s about a triumph.
O – Open Your Heart to Joy
Remember what the angel told the women?
“Why do you seek the living among the dead?”
Jesus is alive — and that brings joy!
Not shallow entertainment, but deep, soul-level joy.
Someone once said,
“Joy is the flag flown high from the castle of the heart when the King is in residence.”
Easter calls us to a joyful spirituality.
To smile more. Live lighter. Dance like the prodigal son coming home!
Sure, COVID was contagious — but let me tell you something else that’s contagious: JOY!
Some people bring joy wherever they go. Others… bring joy whenever they go. 😄
Let’s be the first kind!
Joy doesn’t mean a problem-free life.
It means God is with you — even in your problems.
P – Proclaim the Good News
What did the women do after discovering the empty tomb?
They ran to tell the others!
They became the first preachers of the Resurrection.
Hope is not something to be hidden — it’s meant to be shared.
They say:
“If you want a rumor to spread fast, tell a woman and say, ‘Don’t tell anyone.’” 😆
Maybe that’s why Jesus appeared first to Mary Magdalene!
Proclaiming the Good News today isn’t just about preaching — it’s about witnessing with your life.
In your homes, colleges, workplaces, Insta stories, and WhatsApp groups — let people see Easter in your eyes and hear it in your kindness.
You may be the only Gospel some people will ever read.
E – Embrace Life Fully
The Resurrection is not just a ticket to heaven — it’s a call to live here and now, fully and fearlessly.
Jesus said,
“I have come that you may have life, and have it in abundance.” (John 10:10)
Because Jesus is alive, we don’t have to live half-hearted lives.
We can live boldly. Love deeply. Forgive freely. Dream passionately.
Every sunrise is proof that death has lost its sting.
Don’t just exist — rise up and live!
Start today. Laugh louder. Love stronger. Walk taller. Take that risk.
Conclusion:
Dear friends, the empty tomb is not the end of the story —
It’s God’s exclamation mark in the face of despair!
So this Easter, carry that H.O.P.E. with you:
-
H – He is Risen!
-
O – Open your heart to Joy
-
P – Proclaim the Good News
-
E – Embrace Life Fully
Let the Resurrection not be a one-day celebration —
Let it be a daily revolution in how we think, speak, love, forgive, and live.
And may the Risen Jesus walk with you, laugh with you, cry with you, and raise you daily to new life.
Alleluia! He is Risen indeed! ✨
